Rebuilding Plaquemines Parish Louisiana
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region, the largest natural disaster in United States history. Among the areas hardest hit was a parish of 9000 people just South of New Orleans named Plaquemines Parish Louisiana. Plaquemines Parish was battered by winds and flooding from Katrina as well as flooding by Rita. The area was under water as deep as 20 feet for over a month. There were approximately 3000 homes in the parish that were destroyed. While the buildings were devastated, the people that remain and many who want to return are strong and resolute. Hands of Hope has teamed up with Covenant World Relief to help rebuild this parish. www.rebuildingphoenix.com
On the west bank of the Mississippi River, neighbors returning to the communities of Diamond, Port Sulphur, Narin, Empire, Buras, Boothville and Venice were faced with total devastation. Hands of Hope is working with Covenant World Relief and local pastors to rebuild these areas. With the assistance of volunteers from around the country we have been able to gut houses and assist several hundred residents with debris clean-up. Now the rebuilding effort has begun in full force with the construction of several new homes.
