Geographically Speaking

Located just south of New Orleans,  Plaquemines is Louisiana's southernmost parish where the great Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico.  On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made her initial landfall in Plaquemines.  The north end of the parish was severely hit.  However the eastbank and the south end of the westbank were completely devistated with 150 mph winds and a storm surge that was more than 20 feet high.  Below is a satellite photo of Hurricane Katrina as her eye made landfall at Empire, LA.
